Home Alone

It’s Monday, so you know what that means: Listicles time!

The topic this week is things/people/services that makes our lives easier, so let me just start with my #1:  My parents.

They took my kids back to their house for the first-ever weekend away from us.  My husband went back to Toronto for a bachelor party for one of his friends, so I was alone in my house for 48 hours.  For the first time since my kids were BORN.

And so I have to ignore the rest of the topic to tell you the top ten things I did while Home Alone:

10.  Slept all night with no one stealing my covers.  The cat tried just to make sure I wasn’t lonely, but I kicked her cute butt back onto the floor.

9.  Got the entire house straightened.  I did this in 20-minute bursts, followed by 10 minutes of…

8.  Watching both of the last two Harry Potter movies on DVD.  I’ve already seen them, so I wasn’t tempted to cheat on doing the chores.  I used to read the books that way, too: read a little, clean a little, rinse, repeat.

7.  Cleaned out the Narnia closet.  We have this coat closet in our entry way that seems like a normal coat closet, but if you brush them aside, it goes all the way back under the staircase.  Needless to say, we have a tendency to hide things there that we want to get out of sight for whatever reason.  I can’t tell you how much stuff I found that I’d been looking for months ago!

6.  Read an entire magazine.  I have a subscription to Real Simple (thank you, dear brother and sister-in-law!), and I typically get through each issue in about three months.  I’m not kidding.  But this weekend?  Read the whole thing cover to cover while having breakfast in silence.  Ahhhhh.

5.  Ate whenever and whatever I wanted.  No requests for “sip.  Sip.  SIP!  Peez!!” while I had my chai tea.  No need to wait until after bedtime to sneak cookies.

4.  Got ahead on homework.  I’m now finished a week early with my current class.  Two weeks off before the next one begins.  Fist pump!

3.  Took two showers.  In two days.  Completely unheard of since having Sebastian 3.5 years ago.

2.  Saw the Hunger Games!  Woohoo!  Another post for another time, but good food + good friends + good movie = happiness.

1.  Missed my boys enough to want them to come home today, but not so much that I didn’t have a fabulous weekend.

They were just fine, by the way.  My parents treated them to all kinds of adventures, including both of them sitting up on a horse (or was it a mule?)!  Either way, they came home with big smiles.

Sebastian being brave

Theo's dream come true: driving a tractor

So yes, Skype and Amazon and my iPhone and all that are fabulous things I can’t imagine life without, but I just had to share my weekend.

What would YOU have done with 48 hours alone in your house?

I know I would miss my kids so much, but to have 2 days to myself sounds absolutely wonderful! Glad you enjoyed it!

I would be happy. I love my boy and I don’t feel the need to be away from him but if I had the chance to be home alone for 48 hours I would be happy and make the most of it. And tidy up. It would be great to do so while on my own.
I am so happy for you, for this weekend and for writing it up. Just real happy. Real simple cover to cover-perfection!!

Ha! If you read my latest post you’d know that an uninterrupted shower would be on top of my list too!

I would sleep in. Get a pedicure, see a movie, go shoppin and eat out for every meal….

This day without the kiddos comes with unlimited money right? Haha

I can’t even imagine what this would be like. Heaven, I think. Maybe one day.

Oh I LOVE this post – thank you for sharing your weekend with us! It sounds heavenly; from the sleeping to eating whatever, reading a whole magazine and watching movies. Heavenly. I think I’d try to do those same things as well and just move really slowly while I did it, never worrying about time it was 🙂 Great post!

Having 2 whole days to myself would be heavenly! I would do exactly what you did, well, except for the cleaning part!

forty-eight hours alone IN MY OWN HOUSE? hahahaahahaaha
your weekend sounds like what I’d do, which I characterize as “puttering.” Putter around, do a little of this, a little of that, pause to eat or pee or watch a little telly…but all of it ON MY SCHEDULE. In quiet. When I am alone (which is rarely, in part b/c my darling spouse is also a professor, so he’s home frequently), I sometimes don’t even listen to music because the stillness is such a gift. Unfortunately for me to get “alone time” I have to leave the premises. And while traveling alone is wonderful (and rare, actually), to be alone in my own house would be really, really nice. It sounds like you had a great time and that your batteries are all charged up!

It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I don’t have any idea what is at the back of my Narnia closet.

Nothing compares to 48 hours of peace and quiet. Anything else that happens is just a bonus.

Love this list! I think I’d do a lot of the things you did if I were home alone: eat, sleep, shower, clean and go watch a movie! Of course, I’d add a mani/pedi and a nice glass of wine to the list too. 🙂 Simple stuff, but much needed!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
