Back in the Newbery habit

Once upon a time, I thought I had no time for blogging.  Seemed to me that they were for people who were either promoting a business, writing a book, or stay-at-home moms with nothing else to do.

Then I started reading blogs.

I was intrigued.  I got a bit of an itch to try one out.

I was still biased, though, so instead of starting a “mommy blog” (gasp!), I started one to chronicle the Newbery Project I’d been working on for years.  I’m over halfway to my goal of reading every winner of the Newbery from 1922-present.  But every time I look at the list, I’ve forgotten over half of the books because I either read them a long time ago or I read them too quickly.  A book written for children with a great plot is easy for me to zip through, and so I enjoy them but promptly forget them.

This blog was a way to remember them, as well as let others see what kind of books are considered the best of children’s literature each year.  After all, many people reading blogs have children, and don’t all of us want our children to love books?  Finding my child’s “home run” book that will hook him reading for life is near the very top of my goals as a parent, and of course finding amazing literature to read to my students is pretty high up there on my teacher to-do list, too.

Of course as I got blogging, it got harder and harder to write my reviews.  The posts that seemed to write themselves were either about my own happiness project or about being a mom.  So my poor first blog was left to gather dust.  Until now!

I’ve brought A Very Newbery Plot over here to Team Rasler.  I’ve given it its own page, so you can check out my progress and catch up on the (few) reviews I’ve written so far.  I owe you myself a lot more!

Meanwhile, though I love reading blogs and New York Times articles and Real Simple magazine, it’s going to be fabulous to get back into reading novels.  Just because they’re written for kids doesn’t mean they aren’t incredible.  And maybe it’ll get my head back into the teaching game while I’m at it.

I love kids books – some of my favourites are for kids and there is nothing wrong with that! Can’t wait to check out the page.
